Special battalions are backbone of Telangana Police, says DGP C.V. Anand

Director General of Police C.V. Anand on Tuesday described the Telangana Special Battalions (TGSP) as the backbone of the State police force and called for greater focus on personnel welfare, training, transparent administration and modernisation to prepare the force for emerging policing challenges.

Chairing a comprehensive review meeting at the Telangana Special Battalions headquarters in Jubilee Hills, the DGP reviewed administrative, operational, infrastructure and welfare-related issues before directing officials to expedite recruitment, strengthen technological capabilities and improve living conditions for personnel.

Prior to the meeting, Mr. Anand inspected various sections of the headquarters, including administrative wings, communication systems, armoury management, technical units and infrastructure facilities. He later reviewed presentations by senior officers and issued directions aimed at improving the efficiency of the special battalions.

The DGP instructed officials to fill vacant posts at the earliest, augment vehicle availability and upgrade residential quarters, healthcare facilities, drinking water supply and other welfare measures for personnel.

Recalling the role of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh Special Police during the peak of Left Wing Extremism, Mr.Anand said the battalions had worked alongside the civil police in anti-Naxal operations and played a crucial role in maintaining law and order in difficult conditions.

He said that after the formation of Telangana, the State established 13 special battalions, which have since evolved into a highly capable force deployed during elections, festivals, religious gatherings, VIP security duties, disaster management operations and emergency response.

While noting that Telangana had largely overcome the Naxal challenge that once affected several districts, he said the special battalions must remain prepared for emerging security threats. He added that proposals were under consideration to establish new special battalions in the Future City and Amangal regions to meet future policing requirements.

He further stressed the need for continuous training in technology, weapon handling, disaster management, communication skills, physical fitness and mental resilience, stating that those areas were essential to enhancing operational readiness.
