A fresh spell of monsoon rain is set to lash Kerala over the next few days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall across several parts of the state from Thursday, July 30.
The weather office has issued rain alerts for all districts through August 2, warning that the intensity and spread of rainfall will increase as the monsoon remains active.
INTENSE RAIN INCOMING
For Thursday, the IMD has placed Wayanad, Kozhikode and Kannur under an orange alert, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
The remaining districts are also expected to receive widespread showers, with yellow alerts in place for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kasaragod.
Wayanad has even directed schools to remain shut as rain intensifies across the region.
With heavy rain expected, authorities declared a holiday for all educational institutions in Wayanad on Thursday as a precautionary measure.
However, the order does not apply to residential schools and colleges, which will function as scheduled unless separate instructions are issued.
The fresh spell of rain comes as the southwest monsoon remains active over Kerala.
During this phase of the monsoon, moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea often trigger widespread rainfall across the state, particularly over the northern districts and the Western Ghats, where intense showers are common.
EXTENDED ALERTS ACROSS GOD’S OWN COUNTRY
The weather department has also issued alerts for every district on Friday, July 31, indicating that rainfall is likely to become more widespread across the state.
The exact alert category varies by district and is expected to be updated through regular IMD bulletins based on the evolving weather situation.
Kerala has been witnessing an active southwest monsoon in recent weeks, with recurring spells of heavy rain affecting several districts.
Naturally, with heavier rain spells incoming, the risk of waterlogging in urban areas, rising river levels and disruptions is set to rise, particularly in hilly regions that are prone to landslides during intense rainfall.
