A deep depression over central India is progressing westward, setting the stage for extremely heavy rainfall soon in several regions.
The system is being closely monitored as it continues to influence monsoon activity across multiple states in India this season, bringing heavy rains and storms, helping the nation recover from what has been an uneven and deficient monsoon so far.
A deep depression is a well-marked low-pressure area that draws in large amounts of moisture, often leading to widespread and intense rainfall.
During the Indian monsoon, these systems frequently develop or travel across central and eastern regions, boosting rain in their path and surroundings.
The current deep depression formed on July 25 and has been active over central parts of the country.
As of early July 30, the system remained practically stationary over western parts of central Chhattisgarh and adjoining east Madhya Pradesh.
According to the latest IMD, the system is very likely to move nearly westwards across Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, and adjoining Vidarbha while gradually weakening.
WHAT STATE WILL GET INTENSE MONSOON RAIN?
Under the influence of this system, isolated extremely heavy rainfall of 21 cm or more within 24 hours is likely over Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on July 29, West Madhya Pradesh on July 30, and the Gujarat region on July 31.
Northwest Maharashtra is also expected to receive very heavy spells during the next three days.
This development follows an already active monsoon period.
In late July, south Gujarat experienced record-breaking rains, with Umbergaon in Valsad recording over 1,000 mm in 24 hours, marking one of the highest single-day totals in recent Indian history.
The deluge led to flooding, river overflows, and large-scale rescue operations as thousands were displaced in districts like Valsad, Navsari, and Surat.
AN ACTIVE WEATHER SYSTEM
The depression has significantly influenced monsoon flows, overtaking weather patterns over much of the subcontinent.
Its westward journey continues to sustain above-normal rainfall activity in central and northwest India for the next few days, according to the IMD.
Such systems are common during the peak monsoon but can vary in intensity and impact depending on their speed, moisture feed, and interaction with terrain.
This event highlights the dynamic nature of India’s southwest monsoon, which brings vital water to farmlands but also tests infrastructure and preparedness in vulnerable regions.
