France’s first-ever recorded fire-cloud has added a dramatic new dimension to one of the country’s worst wildfire seasons, highlighting how extreme fires can begin creating their own weather.
The phenomenon, known as a pyrocumulonimbus, was observed over the Gironde region near Bordeaux as firefighters continued battling fast-moving blazes fuelled by intense heat, drought and shifting winds.
WHAT IS A FIRE-CLOUD?
A fire cloud, or pyrocumulonimbus, is a towering thunderstorm-like cloud generated by an intense wildfire rather than ordinary weather.
As a wildfire burns, it releases enormous amounts of heat, sending smoke, ash and water vapour rapidly upward. If the rising plume reaches high enough into the atmosphere, the moisture cools and condenses into a massive cloud.
Scientists often compare it to a giant chimney, with the fire acting as the furnace below. Unlike regular clouds, however, a fire cloud is directly powered by the wildfire itself.
French authorities told news agency Reuters that the cloud observed near Bordeaux is the first recorded pyrocumulonimbus in the country’s history, marking a milestone that experts said reflects the growing intensity of Europe’s wildfire seasons.
HOW DO FIRE-CLOUDS MAKE WILDFIRES MORE DANGEROUS?
A fire cloud can make an already destructive wildfire far more unpredictable.
It can generate powerful, erratic winds that suddenly change the direction and speed of a fire. In some cases, it also produces lightning, which can ignite new fires several kilometres away.
As the cloud weakens, it may collapse, sending burning embers and debris back to the ground, creating fresh flare-ups.
These rapidly changing conditions make it much harder for firefighters to anticipate how a blaze will behave.
Fire scientist David Bowman of the University of Tasmania, while speaking with Reuters, described France’s first fire cloud as both scientifically significant and deeply worrying, warning that such events could become more common in Western Europe as wildfire conditions worsen.
WHY ARE FRANCE’S WILDFIRES SPREADING RAPIDLY?
The wildfires have been fuelled by an unusually dangerous combination of prolonged drought, repeated heatwaves and strong, shifting winds.
Officials in Gironde have said forest conditions are even drier than during France’s devastating 2022 wildfire season, allowing flames to spread quickly through vegetation.
Thousands of firefighters, supported by water-bombing aircraft and helicopters, have been deployed to tackle the blazes.
However, changing winds, extremely dry forests and the emergence of fire clouds have repeatedly undermined containment efforts by creating new hotspots and forcing authorities to expand evacuation zones as a precaution.
A WARNING FOR EUROPE
Pyrocumulonimbus clouds have previously been associated with extreme wildfires in countries such as Australia, Canada and the United States.
Their appearance in France suggests that Europe’s wildfire behaviour is changing as hotter, drier conditions become more frequent.
Scientists caution that a fire cloud is not the cause of a wildfire, but a sign that the blaze has become so intense that it is beginning to generate its own weather.
Once that happens, controlling the fire becomes significantly more difficult, highlighting the growing challenge climate-driven extremes pose to Europe.
