SpaceX’s Starship upper stage completed its planned flight and splashed down in the Indian Ocean on Saturday, July 25, bringing the company’s 13th integrated Starship test mission to a close after successfully completing a series of major in-flight objectives.
The splashdown marked the final planned milestone of Flight 13, which lifted off earlier from Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, at around 4:15 am IST on Friday atop the Super Heavy booster.
SpaceX confirmed the mission accomplished after Starship completed its planned suborbital flight and reached its designated splashdown zone in the Indian Ocean west of Australia, successfully concluding the test.
A PRODUCTIVE STARSHIP FLIGHT 13
After separating from the Super Heavy booster, Starship continued along its planned suborbital trajectory, carrying out a series of demonstrations designed to prepare the rocket for future operational missions.
The spacecraft successfully deployed 20 next-generation Starlink Version 3 satellites, marking the first time Starship has carried the upgraded satellites.
The satellites briefly tested onboard systems, including solar arrays, communications antennas and laser links, before re-entering Earth’s atmosphere as planned because the mission followed a suborbital trajectory.
SpaceX also successfully completed a 14-second in-space relight of a single Raptor engine, its longest engine burn in space to date, demonstrating a critical capability needed for future orbital missions that require multiple engine firings.
A STEP TOWARDS REUSABLE ROCKETS
Flight 13 builds on lessons from previous Starship missions as SpaceX works to transform the world’s largest rocket into a fully reusable launch system capable of flying frequently and at lower cost.
Starship is central to the company’s plans to deploy larger Starlink satellites, support NASA’s Artemis missions to the Moon and eventually carry humans to Mars.
With the mission now complete, SpaceX engineers will review data collected throughout launch, stage separation, payload deployment, engine performance, re-entry and splashdown.
The findings will help shape future Starship flights as the company moves closer to routine operations. SpaceX is expected to publish a detailed post-flight assessment after engineers complete their analysis of Flight 13.
