Heavy monsoon rain is set to continue across large parts of northern and eastern India on Friday, July 10, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of intense rainfall over several states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The IMD said Uttarakhand is likely to bear the brunt of the wet spell, with isolated places expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall.
Heavy to very heavy rain has also been forecast over Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
The widespread rain comes just a day after the southwest monsoon completed its advance across the entire country on July 9, only one day later than its normal date of July 8.
Scenes from Delhi-NCR made the monsoon’s progress apparent as rains lashed the capital region from July 9 midnight all the way until morning, leading to waterlogging, tree-uprooting, and major disruptions to the daily lives of the residents, with forecasts suggesting more rains to follow through Friday.
DELHI, HARYANA UNDER RAIN WATCH
For Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh, the IMD has forecast isolated heavy rainfall on July 10, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
Heavy rain is also expected over Bihar, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, coastal parts of Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and the northeastern states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are likely over parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Some eastern states may also witness winds of 30-40 kmph along with lightning.
MONSOON RAINS TO REMAIN ACTIVE
According to the IMD, the current spell is being fuelled by a well-marked low-pressure area persisting over southwest Uttar Pradesh and adjoining regions, along with an active monsoon trough extending across northern India.
The weather system is expected to move slowly northeastwards and weaken gradually over the next 24 hours, but it will continue to support widespread rainfall across north, east and parts of central India.
The wet conditions are unlikely to ease immediately.
The IMD expects widespread to fairly widespread rainfall to continue over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, northeastern states and parts of West Bengal and Sikkim over the next several days.
Delhi and neighbouring areas are also likely to receive intermittent showers through the weekend, keeping monsoon activity active across much of northwest India.
