But while humans worry and wonder over present-day snakes, the lore of their ancestors is vital to remind them, that snakes are not ones to be taken lightly.A snake weighing 1100 kg, as long as a small plane was once the mega-predator of the Amazon forest, ruling over everyone in the rainforests of South America. Known as Titanoboa, this prehistoric serpent stretched nearly 45 feet (13.7 m) from head to tail and weighed close to 2,500 pounds (1.1 tons).Its sheer size and weight allowed it to crush crocodiles and giant fish with bone-snapping force, making it the apex predator of the jungle. While the lore might sound like a sci-fi horror flick, this slithering giant was very real.
Titanoboa: King of the jungle
As long as a small plane and as heavy as a small car, Titanoboa is said to have ruled the topical ecosystems only 6 million years after the demise of the fiery Tyrannosaurus rex, as per a discovery published in the journal Nature.Partial skeletons of the giant, boa constrictor-like snake, named Titanoboa cerrejonensis, were found in Colombia by an international team of scientists. They are now held at the Florida Museum of Natural History, proving the existence of the terrifying giant.Based on the diameter of the fossilised vertebrae, the snake is estimated to be 42 to 45 feet long. It weighed approximately 1.25 tons and lived during the Palaeocene Epoch, a 10-million-year period immediately following the extinction of the dinosaurs.“Truly enormous snakes really spark people’s imagination, but reality has exceeded the fantasies of Hollywood,” said Bloch, who co-led the expedition with Carlos Jaramillo, a paleobotanist from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama.
A heavy form
The snake’s gigantic dimensions are a sign that the temperatures along the equator were once much higher. The size of snakes and other cold-blooded animals is limited by the ambient temperatures of where they live.When it comes to cold-blooded animals, the large ones are in the tropics where it’s the hottest and they become smaller, as you move farther from the equator. However, due to Titanoboa’s size, the scientists were able to calculate the mean annual temperature at equatorial South America about 60 million years ago to be 91 degrees Fahrenheit, about 10 degrees warmer than today.When it comes to its size, it was 45 feet on average, which is a third larger than the green anaconda, the largest snake that exists today.
A healthy diet
According to scientists, the Titanoboa thrived alongside other enormous species like 13-foot crocodiles and 8-foot turtles. Too heavy to reside in trees unlike his present-day contemporaries, he would have occupied the ground. Living close to the water, inactive most of the time due to its size, it would have waited patiently to pounce on any number of these turtles and crocodiles that fell victim to its coiling strength or forceful bite. “It would have swallowed them whole and digested them for months, eating three to four times per year,” said Carlos Jaramillo, a palaeontologist at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Huge turtles with broken shells have also been excavated which likely resulted from turtles that were attacked by the giant creature but somehow survived.
