Former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi finally vacated her official residence on 10, Circular Road in Patna on Thursday (July 2, 2026). She had been living there along with her family members, including former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, for about 20 years.

Ms. Devi, the Leader of Opposition in the State Legislative Council, moved to her private accommodation, though some of her household items were sent to her younger son Tejashwi Yadav’s official residence.

Earlier, the BJP-led NDA government had issued several notices to Ms. Devi to vacate the Circular Road bungalow, as it had been allotted to the Dairy, Fisheries and Animal Resources Minister Nand Kishor Ram.

Ms. Devi has been given a bungalow at 39, Hardinge Road, where renovation work is being done for the convenience of her ailing husband Mr. Prasad.

On Thursday afternoon, the family informed the State Building Construction Department that it was vacating the Circular Road property. After shifting most of her belongings, Ms. Devi sought a list of inventories from the Department to avoid any controversy. RJD leaders and workers, who have been sitting at the gate of the bungalow for the past few days proving a ‘security cover’ to the family, also left.

Ms. Devi being asked to vacate the bungalow had become a political rallying point for her party. When the State government had issued the last notice asking the leader to vacate by June 29, Ms. Devi had dared the government to “evict her from the bungalow using force”. Later, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary said that those occupying the official bungalow have to vacate “at any cost”. On Wednesday (July 1), Mr. Tejashwi said that “politics should not happen” on the issue but added that “even those who do not deserve, have been provided government residences”.

RJD foundation day

The RJD had organised an event on Wednesday to celebrate its 30th foundation day and had said that the celebrations would continue for four days. The party was founded by Mr. Prasad on July 5, 1997. However, on Thursday the ruling NDA leaders alleged that since Mr. Tejashwi had to go on a foreign trip, the party celebrated its foundation day on Wednesday itself. The RJD hit back, saying the NDA is suffering from “Tejashwi phobia”.

“How does it matter where Tejashwi Yadav is going and when his party celebrates even its foundation day?” asked party spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari.
