Is the repsonse to this heatware ‘different’?

Lewizzle asks: This year feels different in terms of media coverage and government responses, even though heatwaves have increasingly become a recurring feature. Is that simply because of the unprecedented geographical scale and intensity of this year’s heatwave, or are there other factors at play?

double quotation markAjit:It feels different to me too and I think frequency, intensity and awareness all play a role. Because there is widespread understanding of the science of climate change – and the link to heatwaves is more immediately obvious than it is to floods or hurricanes – people are better placed to join the dots. Couple that with the intensity (I had never experienced back-to-back days of 39C heat till this weekend) and the frequency (a couple of awfully hot years are within recent memory) and it’s harder to dismiss the current discomfort as an outlier.
