The accused, Sachin Ramesh Suvarna, has told police that he stabbed Mayank Lohar after an argument escalated, and that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. A Borivali court has remanded him to police custody until June 29.

Suvarna confessed on Thursday (June 25, 2026) during interrogation in police custody, officials said. According to his statement, Lohar asked him to close the train door because rainwater was entering the compartment. The two got into an argument, during which Lohar punched Suvarna. Other passengers in the coach sided with Lohar and assaulted Suvarna, he said.

Under the influence of alcohol and reacting to the humiliation, Suvarna stated that he took out a sharp knife from his bag and stabbed Lohar in the chest and abdomen. He had been produced before the Borivali magistrate court on June 24. Police sought custody for the recovery of the weapon and a deeper investigation. The court granted police remand until June 29.

The incident occurred on Tuesday (June 24) night on the Churchgate-Nallasopara fast local between Andheri and Borivali stations. The argument began at 10.42 p.m. as the train pulled into Andheri station. Suvarna, a resident of Mira Road, stabbed Lohar and jumped out of the train at Borivali station before it halted.

Lohar collapsed and was rushed to a nearby medical facility by Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel. He was later taken to a civic-run hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The Western Railway administration said the train arrived at Borivali station at 11.04 p.m. GRP and RPF reached the coach within three minutes and mobilised medical staff, a stretcher and porters. Lohar was brought to the station’s emergency medical room at 11.22 p.m. Following medical advice, railway authorities coordinated his transfer to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali by ambulance at 11.42 p.m.

The administration has secured CCTV footage and other evidence from the scene and handed them over to investigating agencies. Senior railway officials visited Borivali station around 1 a.m. to review the incident.

Police are now investigating whether Suvarna has a previous criminal record, in addition to examining eyewitness accounts and the secured footage.
