The ground shook in different parts of the world on June 24-25.

With the occurrences happening within hours, and in some cases even minutes, of each other, the earthquakes have naturally left many to wonder whether they were linked to each other.

EARTHQUAKES AROUND THE WORLD

Two major quakes hit Venezuela in quick succession, followed soon by a strong tremor off Japan.

A moderate quake also shook northern California the same day, with tremors felt across a wide area.

The first major event struck Venezuela around 3:34 am IST on June 25 when a magnitude 7.2 quake hit near Moron in Yaracuy state, west of Caracas.

Just moments later, a stronger magnitude 7.5 earthquake followed in the same region.

These were among the strongest earthquakes to strike Venezuela in more than a century, causing buildings to collapse and triggering widespread panic as residents rushed to safety.

Roughly 30 to 40 minutes later, an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 struck off the Pacific coast of Iwate Prefecture in northeastern Japan.

Earlier on June 24, at around 8:40 pm IST, a magnitude 5.6 quake rattled northern California near Redwood Valley in Mendocino County.

WERE EARTHQUAKES IN JAPAN, VENEZUELA, AND US CONNECTED?

Experts have clearly stated that there is no credible connection between these events. In fact, they occurred in entirely different tectonic settings across thousands of kilometres.

Venezuela lies on a complex boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates, where the plates slide past each other.

Japan sits on the seismically active Ring of Fire, where the Pacific plate subducts under other plates, creating frequent strong earthquakes.

California’s quake, on the other hand, was linked to faults in the San Andreas system.

While a large earthquake releases energy that can create very small stress changes on distant faults worldwide, these effects are usually far too weak to trigger another quake thousands of kilometres away.

Seismologists often emphasise that such occurrences of quakes of more than a magnitude 6 on the same day, though uncommon, happen naturally.

The Earth records thousands of tremors every day, most too small to feel. There is no scientific evidence of any global triggering mechanism connecting these specific quakes.

The near-simultaneous timing appears to be a coincidence rather than a coordinated geological event.

The 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude quakes near Caracas caused building collapses, at least 32 deaths, and dozens of injuries. But as operations go on, the death toll is expected to rise.

In Japan, the 6.9 magnitude offshore quake caused strong shaking but no major damage or injuries.

In California, the M5.6 quake led to minor injuries and power outages but no deaths.

As rescue operations continue in Venezuela, scientists are expected to study these quakes for better future understanding. For now, they serve as reminders of Earth’s dynamic geology rather than any linked global phenomenon.
