Sony Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for Klara and the Sun, offering a glimpse at director Taika Waititi’s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s acclaimed science-fiction novel.

Led by Jenna Ortega, the film is set in a near-future world where advanced artificial companions are created to help combat loneliness. Ortega stars as Klara, a solar-powered Artificial Friend designed to provide companionship and emotional support to children and teenagers.
The trailer introduces Klara as she is purchased by a mother, played by Amy Adams, for her daughter Josie, portrayed by Mia Tharia. As Klara becomes part of the family, she begins to develop a deeper understanding of human emotions and relationships while confronting the reality of Josie’s mysterious and worsening illness.
Alongside Ortega and Adams, the film features Natasha Lyonne, Steve Buscemi, and Aran Murphy, the son of Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy. The screenplay was written by Dahvi Waller, with Ishiguro serving as an executive producer on the project.
Published in 2021, Ishiguro’s novel became a critical and commercial success, praised for its exploration of artificial intelligence, social inequality, and what it means to be human. The author is also known for Never Let Me Go, which was previously adapted into an acclaimed feature film.

Klara and the Sun continues a busy period for Ortega, who has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand young stars through projects including Wednesday, Death of a Unicorn, Hurry Up Tomorrow, and The Gallerist.
Produced by David Heyman, Garrett Basch, and Waititi, Klara and the Sun is scheduled to release theatrically on October 23.
