The police on Monday returned 100 cell phones that they recovered through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal to rightful owners.
The Doddapete police received complaints regarding phones being lost in various places, including the bus stand, cloth shops and other commercial areas within its limits in the city.
Nikhil B., Superintendent of Police of Shivamogga, speaking on the occasion, said that through the CEIR portal the phones could be tracked, provided the complainants furnish IMEI numbers, a unique code assigned to every mobile phone.
“Our police have recovered phones that were traced to be functioning as far as Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and other States,” Mr. Nikhil said.

In the district since January this year, the police have so far recovered nearly 1,000 cell phones, and the Doddapete Police hold the record of recovering the highest number of cell phones, the Superintendent of Police added.
Mr. Nikhil inaugurated a visitors’ lounge on the station premises on the occasion. He said that the lounge was part of the efforts to ensure victim-centric policing.
Inspector Sathyanarayana and other officials were present on the occasion.
