Facing a staggering backlog of over 1.4 crore traffic violation cases and unpaid penalties exceeding ₹642 crore, a 50% concession on eligible traffic e-challan fines has been announced, offering a limited-time opportunity to settle long-pending dues between June 21 and July 10.
The concession applies to traffic e-challan cases registered by the Police Department before May 2026, and Transport Department cases booked between 1991 and 2022, Principal District and Sessions Judge Usha Rani said after presiding over a meeting of officials at the New Court Complex on Monday.
According to official data, the Mysuru City Police have 1,04,18,480 pending traffic challan cases, which involve unpaid fines totalling ₹458.04 crore. Additionally, the Mysuru district police handle another 36,73,737 cases with outstanding dues of ₹184.05 crore. In total, the district has 1,40,92,217 unresolved cases, with cumulative fines amounting to ₹642.09 crore.
The Regional Transport Office (East) has 792 pending cases involving fines of ₹24.12 lakh, while the Hunsur RTO division has 864 cases with dues of ₹30.99 lakh, taking the total pending Transport Department cases to 1,656 and unpaid fines to ₹55.11 lakh.
Directing officials to widely publicise the scheme, Ms. Usha Rani said special booths would be opened at both the old and new court complexes to facilitate payment of fines during the concession period.
Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi said a similar drive conducted in 2025 had resulted in the collection of ₹1.43 crore and ₹43.8 lakh in pending fines. This year, the police plan to use beat officers and social media platforms to improve awareness and collections.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sundar Raj said arrangements would be made to collect fines at all 18 police stations and five traffic police stations in the city. Additional counters will be opened if required, he added.
Special Lok Adalat
The District Judge also announced that the Supreme Court will organise a Special Lok Adalat from August 21 to 23 for the settlement of identified cases. Pre-Lok Adalat proceedings will be conducted through video conferencing, allowing litigants to participate either virtually or in person.
The list of cases identified for settlement will be published on the website of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority. Litigants may also visit video-conferencing centres established at District Legal Services Authorities to participate in the proceedings. A Google form has been made available for advocates and litigants to register before July 31.
