The southwest monsoon continued its gradual advance across parts of India on June 8, covering additional areas of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, while large parts of north and central India remained under dry and hot weather conditions.

The western arm of the monsoon has progressed steadily through the Arabian Sea and parts of southern and central India. The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) currently passes through Harnai and Sangli in Maharashtra, Kalaburagi in Karnataka, Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh and Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

“The monsoon has already covered most northeastern states, including Tripura, eastern Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Its eastern boundary currently extends through Kailashahar, eastern Assam and North Lakhimpur,” Devendra Tripathi, founder of Mausam Tak said.

However, meteorologists noted that the eastern arm of the monsoon remains slightly weak and delayed due to subdued activity over the central and western Bay of Bengal.

While the monsoon arrived in Kerala three days later than usual, its western branch has since maintained a near-normal pace of advancement. The central corridor stretching from Tamil Nadu to West Bengal, however, continues to witness weaker monsoon activity because of limited moisture support from the Bay of Bengal.

Monsoon advance Karnataka

Rainfall activity is expected to intensify over parts of western and southern India during the next 24 hours. Most districts south of Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra are likely to receive rain, including Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and parts of Marathwada. Vidarbha may experience isolated showers.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast along the Karnataka coast, where localized flooding cannot be ruled out. Similar conditions are expected in Goa, while districts such as Sindhudurg and Satara in Maharashtra could witness intense spells of rain. Kerala is also likely to receive widespread heavy rainfall.

Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and interior Karnataka are expected to witness light to moderate showers. Meanwhile, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are still awaiting the arrival of the monsoon, although cloud cover and isolated rainfall may occur in some southern and coastal districts.

NORTH INDIA TO BAKE ON TUESDAY

In contrast, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir are likely to experience predominantly dry, hot and humid weather on Tuesday.

Weather experts said pockets of thunderclouds could develop over cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, Agra, Prayagraj, Ludhiana and Patiala due to local moisture.

However, these will remain isolated events and are unlikely to signal the arrival of sustained monsoon conditions in northern India.
