Mobile internet services were suspended, prohibitory orders issued, and a large number of police personnel were deployed on Monday (June 8, 2026) for a major anti-encroachment drive launched by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA), which has started work on a long-pending road-widening project on Nandpuri underpass in Jagatpura area.
An internet shutdown has been imposed for 24 hours as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of rumours and inflammatory contents on social media, which could disrupt the law and order situation.
The 1.5-km road stretch in the south-eastern periphery of Jaipur, running parallel to a railway line, is being expanded from its current width of 25-30 feet to 80 feet.
The anti-encroachment operation will also remove large-scale unauthorised structures which are obstructing public infrastructure projects in other parts of the State capital.
The demolition drive includes the removal of five religious structures encroaching within the Nandpuri road’s designated boundary. The owners were given time earlier to remove the constructions voluntarily before any action was initiated. The religious structures include a mosque, two temples, a Satsang (devotional gathering) hall and a Mazaar (tomb).
More than 3,000 police personnel were deployed across the city, including 12 companies of the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC), with increased surveillance in sensitive areas. Half-a-dozen bulldozers, excavators and dumpers for debris removal arrived at the location on Monday (June 8) morning.
The Nandpuri area was cordoned off before the JDA commenced the operation and barricades were placed on major routes to halt general traffic. In his orders issued late on Sunday (June 7) night, Jaipur Divisional Commissioner V. Saravana Kumar said mobile internet restrictions would apply to 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G services, as well as bulk SMS, MMS, and major social media platforms, till Monday (June 8) midnight.
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) — which came into force on Sunday (June 7) evening — will remain effective till June 22 midnight. The restrictions prohibit rallies, demonstrations, processions, and public meetings without prior permission from authorities.
Jaipur Police Commissioner Sachin Mittal said strict action would be taken against anyone who tries to inflame religious sentiments or circulate false information. “A strict watch is being maintained on anti-social elements who may attempt to disturb communal harmony through provocative statements or misleading contents,” Mr. Mittal said.
