As part of Operation Gajamukthi, which is aimed at reducing human-wildlife conflict in the Aralam farm and rehabilitation areas, forest officials on Tuesday (May 19) drove away a herd of wild elephants from vulnerable zones in the farm.
The operation carried out by two teams began in Block 1 and the nursery area of Block 5 of the farm. Officials monitored the movement of the elephants and drove two tuskers, identified as a big tusker and a Makhna (tuskless elephant), through Ekkundi towards Block 2 of the farm.
Subsequently, six elephants, including the two shifted from Blocks 1 and 5, were driven from Block 2 through Block 4 towards the helipad area. However, while attempting to move the herd from the helipad area in the Vattakkad region towards Thalippara, the elephants turned back, making it difficult for the team to continue the drive operation.
The operation was conducted under the leadership of the Aralam Assistant Wildlife Warden and the Kottiyoor Range Forest Officer. A total of 47 personnel participated in the mission.
