Etching history, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to win West Bengal State Assembly polls on Monday (May 4, 2026), leading on 189 of 293 seats. The counting of votes is put on hold in Falta.

Ending Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year reign as Chief Minister, the BJP has banked on turncoats since 2021 to gain foothold in its founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s homeland. Of the seven Trinamool Congress leaders who joined the BJP since 2024, it fielded only two — Dibyendu Adhikari and Tapas in head-to-head fights against TMC.
