The rural Assembly segment of Usilampatti is a microcosm of the independent spirit of Madurai district. Here even a small function gives room for a whole-hearted reverberating celebration. About 30 km from Madurai, chequered fields where paddy and jasmine are grown greet travellers taking Madurai-Kochi National Highway 49. This highway, while crossing Usilampatti, becomes chock-a-block with traffic and during marriage and festival season, traffic jams are frequent. In 1995, Usilampatti was constituted as a third-grade municipality. With no large-scale infrastructure development, this town still retains its rural nature.
For the locals, Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar and P.K. Mookiah Thevar are heroes, and they always have a soft corner for the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB). Till 2021 Assembly elections, the AIFB has either won the seat or has finished a close second or third after the Dravidian parties. Now, with the AIFB in splinters, the voters have to choose candidates from either of the Dravidian parties
