In his third consecutive appearance in the past three days, Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was questioned by the West Bengal Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday (June 16, 2026) in connection with alleged inflammatory statements made by him during the election campaign.

Mr. Banerjee was earlier questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday for 11 hours over the alleged school job scam, and for about eight hours by the CID on Sunday (June 14, 2026) in connection with the legislators’ signature forgery case, three days after questioning him for over five hours on June 11.

The Diamond Harbour MP was questioned on Tuesday in connection with a First Information Report (FIR) lodged at the Bidhannagar police station by an individual, Rajib Sarkar, on May 15 for allegedly making provocative remarks in some speeches posted on social media.

Mr. Banerjee arrived at the West Bengal Police headquarters, Bhabani Bhawan, at 11:57 a.m., and left at about 6.30 p.m. after the interrogation.

Mr. Banerjee made his first appearance before the CID on Thursday (June 11, 2026) after the Calcutta High Court had earlier in the day directed the Trinamool leader to appear before the agency in connection with the West Bengal Assembly signature scandal investigation by 6 p.m. on the same day. The court also granted three-week interim protection to Mr. Banerjee, directing that the CID could not take any coercive action as long as he cooperated with the investigation.

Meanwhile, Maidul Islam, a leader of the TMC teachers’ outfit and a close aide of Mr. Banerjee, was also arrested by the Hatuaganj police in South 24 Parganas in connection with a case of abetment in the suicide of Debabrata Bhattacharya, then deputy chief of the Bolsiddhi Kalinagar Gram Panchayat in South 24 Parganas in 2022.

Meanwhile, an official team from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation reached at Mr. Banerjee’s Kalighat residence on Tuesday afternoon to carry out measurements as part of an inspection to verify whether the property complies with approved building regulations.
