The Director General (DG) of the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) arrived in Delhi on Monday to participate in the first round of the biannual DG-level talks with the Border Security Force (BSF).
The talks, scheduled to continue till June 11, are taking place against the backdrop of tensions between the two border-guarding forces over allegations by Bangladesh that the BSF has been sending undocumented Bangladeshis across the border through multiple land entry points.
The alleged practice, termed “push-in” by the neighbouring country, bypassing the formal deportation procedure, is one of the key agendas of the BGB.
The BSF has denied carrying out any “push-ins”, maintaining that the illegal migrants belong to Bangladesh and that they should return to their country.
The BSF, in a post on X, said the 57th DG -level Border Co-ordination Conference between the BSF and the BGB has started.
The BSF delegation is being led by Director General Praveen Kumar, while the BGB delegation is headed by Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, Director General of the BGB.
The BSF said its DG received and welcomed the BGB delegation at the Delhi airport on Monday. “The conference is being held to discuss and deliberate upon border-related issues and for better coordination between both the Border Guarding Forces,” the BSF said.
This is the first such meeting following the formation of a new government under the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the neighbouring country and after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power for the first time in West Bengal.
Last week, the BGB issued a statement claiming that it had successfully foiled 10 separate attempts by the BSF to “illegally push in” around 60 people across various border areas.
The BSF said that during the course of the conference, discussions would be held on prevention of assaults on BSF personnel and Indian civilians by Bangladesh nationals, measures to prevent trans-border crimes, prevention of entry of Bangladeshi criminals into India, incidents of fence breaching by Bangladesh nationals, construction of border fence work, action against Indian Insurgent Groups (IIGs) in Bangladesh, issues related to border infrastructure and confidence-building measures.
The last such conference was held in Dhaka from August 25 to 28 in 2025.
