A Geographical Indication (GI) tag application has been filed for the ‘Ananthapuramu Lemon’, a citrus variety grown in parts of Anantapur district.
In a press release on Sunday (May 24, 2026), Madanapalle Institute of Technology and Science (MITS) Vice-Chancellor C. Yuvaraj said the application was filed with help from the institute’s Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre (IPFC). He said lemons grown in Peddapappur, Peddavadugur, Tadipatri and Yadiki mandals had distinctive features, including uniform size, bright colour, high juice content, balanced acidity, strong aroma and longer shelf life. “The initiative would strengthen regional horticulture branding and encourage value-added agricultural exports,” he said.

The GI tag would protect the product’s regional identity, prevent misuse of its name and improve market opportunities for local farmers. MITS Chancellor N. Vijaya Bhaskar Choudary appreciated the efforts of the AFLABT Farmers Producer Company, the MITS-IPFC and the university’s R&D Cell in supporting the registration.
