Minister of BC and EWS Welfare, Handloom & Textiles S. Savitha directed the officials on Tuesday (June 9, 2026) to ensure proper maintenance of the welfare hostels and to avoid any criticism from any quarters.
Addressing a review meeting here on Tuesday, the Minister instructed the officials to complete the repair work and ensure proper upkeep by the time the boarders arrive after the admission process for the new academic year.
She recalled the numerous complaints received from the inmates regarding the wardens and principals last year and minced no words in stating that a repeat of such incidents would be dealt with seriously. She also cautioned them about the opposition parties on the prowl, ready to give ‘selective leaks’ to the media to blow things out of proportion.
In tune with the government’s focus on providing education to the Backward Classes, she emphasized the importance of improving the intake in BC welfare hostels and directed the authorities to conduct medical tests upon their arrival. She also announced the implementation of special coaching for the inmates to prepare them for entrance examinations into professional courses like IIT and NEET.
Turning her attention to the Handloom Department, she suggested improving the over-the-counter sales of handloom products in APCO showrooms across the State.
